Samuel saw the doctor for the first time since he was born Tuesday for his two week appointment. The doctor said Samuel is an "All-Star." He has gained back all his birth weight and surpassed it quite a bit! He now weighs 9 lb 7.5 oz, is 21 in long, and has a head circumference of 14.5 in (.25 in larger than birth). Clearly, our son is getting plenty to eat. Samuel proved to the doctor that he has very good lungs by crying through the ENTIRE appointment (Mom's head hurt by the end)! He passed all the doctor's tests and we got the okay to start giving him bottles (to adjust for daycare), pacifiers, and real baths.
First Bath:
Samuel has had sponge baths, which he hates, but hadn't had a real bath because he still had his umbilical cord. Now that Samuel is the proud owner of a very nice, healed belly button, we were able to give him his first bath. He did not like being stripped down, but once we put him in the warm water, he settled and thought this might be "okay." However, every time I tried to snap a picture, he started to fuss.
First Favorite Toy:
We have tried to introduce Samuel to simple baby toys, but nothing has really caught his attention...until yesterday. We bought an infant travel bed in preparation for a couple of trips this year. The travel bed has a toy bar with two simple toys on it - a block and a bear. We laid Samuel in the bed just to try it out and the block caught his attention right away and he stared at it and watched it move when Grandpa hit it. Then Samuel started to try to hit it (with somewhat controlled movements - newborn style, that is). Since he couldn't reach it, we dropped it down using a baby ring, and Samuel managed to hit the block. Then he did it again...and again. He still showed interest in it when we laid him in the bed to show Daddy that evening, and again this morning. It's really fascinating to see him take such interest in a toy.
First Outings:
Samuel's been out on a few outings since he was born. He's been to Target with Mommy and Grandma, the Mall with Mommy and Daddy, Meijer with Mommy and Daddy, etc. But, until this week, it wasn't cold enough to need more than a couple of blankets in his carseat. This week a friend gave Samuel a really cute snowsuit and it got cold enough that he needed it to go out with Mommy. He didn't mind it too much...and he looked super cute in it!
First Bottle:
Okay, so we cheated a little on this one. The doctor just told us we could introduce a bottle, but we had actually given him two or three before that. He took his first bottle from Daddy and Grandma really well. We tried giving him a few night-time bottles, but he seems to prefer Mommy at night. Daddy gave him a bottle for dinner last night, though, and Samuel really liked that. He doesn't seem to have any trouble incorporating a bottle a day and still likes to take milk from Mommy the rest of the time.
First Pacifier:
He has also been taking a pacifier for a little over a week (yep, we cheated on that one, too! Sleep deprived parents take desperate measures). Samuel picked his own pacifier. We had purchased 4 kinds for him to try. He couldn't keep the Soothie in his mouth, the Mimi gagged him, the Purdue one (similar to Nuk) was just too big, but he latched right onto the Playtex Ortho. We've tried the others a few times since he initially picked the Ortho and he just doesn't take them as well...so we've invested in six to make sure there's always one where we need it!
